The Latest Big Trees State Park Prescribed Burn Underway & Proceeding Well

Arnold, CA…California State Parks and CAL FIRE Plan Prescribed Burn at Calaveras Big Trees State Park started off well. State Parks in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection (CAL FIRE) are conducting a prescribed burn between Monday, June 8,2020 to June 15, 2020, in Calaveras Big Trees State Park, pending favorable weather conditions. This bum is part of the series of prescription burns planned for the park this year. The work will be in the North Grove area This burn will cover approximately 210-acres between the East Moran Fire Road and the Walter W. Smith Parkway.

Ignition is dependent on weather conditions and resources. Acton burning will occur over 5 days, however, smoke will remain in the area after active firing has stopped The unit has been prepared for broadcast bunting by thinning b reduce fuel loading, removing snags along the site’s perimeter, and Bearing fuels along the fire roads used for control lines, allowing for a saMr and more controllable broadcast burn.

Highway 4 will remain open but may experience delays due to smoke and other hazards. Some public sites near the bum areas will be closed doting prescribed bum operations including the East Moran file road. the North Grove fire road, and the Walter W. Smith Parkway. Please obey WI warning sons These burns are part of the prescribed fire program for vegetation management, hazardous fuel bad reduction, wildlife habitat improvement enhancement of the health of the forest by removing diseased materials, restoring essential nutrients to the soil, and reducing the chance of a catastrophic wildfire. Forest thinning and prescribed fire restore and maintain an ecologically healthy forest system. Additional benefits of these prescribed burns include protection of the park system from wildfires.
