Forest Service Extends Closure of Some Campgrounds Through July 15

Sonora, CA…The Stanislaus National Forest announced that some developed recreation sites will remain closed through July 15, 2020. While some sites remain closed, forest crews have been preparing most campgrounds and day use sites for public use. Forest order STF-16-2020-16 identifies those recreation sites that employees have been able to safely open. “I am proud of the work our employees have accomplished under very difficult conditions to reopen sites so our visitors can recreate in this wonderful landscape,” said Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor Jason Kuiken.

A copy of the forest order will be posted on the Stanislaus National Forest web page as soon as it is available.

The Forest Service is working with county and local partners to reopen developed recreation sites, but Kuiken urged visitors to expect a different experience due to social distancing and the CDC guidelines for health and safety. “Employee and public safety remains our number one priority, and we will closely monitor the situation and make changes accordingly. However, please be prepared to be self-reliant by bringing your own soap, hand sanitizer, toilet tissue and drinking water,” he said. “The list of open sites will continue to increase as we as we are able to safely open sites for public use. We will keep the list updated on our web page for easy reference.”

Trash removal is very limited, so please pack out all trash and waste. “We are seeing tremendous pressure being placed on the forest due to the increased visitation, in terms of visitors leaving trash behind and having too many people dispersed camping, and having illegal campfires,” Kuiken said. “We need each visitor to be active stewards of nature by leaving no trace of your visit. That includes respecting the fire restrictions that are in place for the forest’s and the surrounding communities’ safety.”
