Vallecito, CA…On July 31, 2020 at about 10:30 AM the Calaveras County Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a witness stating a male pushed his 77 year old elderly grandfather to the ground during an argument. Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 3000 block of Juniper Rd., Vallecito, to investigate. While responding, the dispatch center received a second 911 call stating the suspect was on a “rampage”, throwing things around the residence and threatening to kill the victims. The victims fled from the residence in fear for their life and waited nearby for law enforcement to arrive.
Upon arrival, deputies learned that suspect Cory Virgil Baugh (37 from Vallecito, CA) was responsible for shoving the elderly victim to the ground and made threats to harm subjects on scene. Witnesses advised deputies that suspect Cory was still hostile and inside the residence. Calaveras County Deputies and Angels Camp Police Officers set up a perimeter and advised neighbors to shelter in place. They attempted to contact suspect Cory to get him to peacefully exit the house. Initial dialogue between the deputies and suspect Cory were not fruitful, with him refusing to exit the residence.
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) was requested to the scene to continue de-escalating communication techniques with suspect Cory and attempt to peacefully resolve the situation. A Negotiator on scene spent time talking with the suspect and eventually was able to defuse the situation with the suspect exiting the front of the residence and surrendering to deputies without incident.
Suspect Cory Virgil Baugh was transported to the Calaveras County Jail and booked with charges of 368 PC Elder Abuse (Felony) and two counts of 422 PC Criminal Threats (Felony). He is being held with a bail of $150,000.00.
