Traffic Stop Yields Arrest for Stolen Property

Mountain Ranch, CA…On December 16, 2020, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Off-Highway Vehicle Enforcement Deputy was patrolling Ponderosa Road in Mountain Ranch. While patrolling, the deputy observed a person operating an all-terrain vehicle on Ponderosa Road while its driver was not wearing a helmet. The deputy also noticed there was no visible registration placard on the all-terrain vehicle.

The deputy initiated a traffic enforcement stop and contacted the operator, who was identified as Roland Ted Retherford (62 years old of Mountain Ranch, CA).

A records check revealed a warrant issued from the Superior Court of Amador County for the arrest of Retherford with a listed charge of Penal Code 496 (Possession of Stolen Property-Felony). The all-terrain vehicle, which Retherford was driving, had been reported as stolen on May 14, 2020.

Suspect Retherford was placed under arrest for the outstanding warrant and a new charge of possession of the stolen property (the all-terrain vehicle). The deputy searched Retherford’s personal belongings prior to transporting Retherford. While doing so, he located a glass smoking device that is used to smoke controlled substances.

Roland Ted Retherford was transported and booked in the Calaveras County Jail. He was charged with a felony warrant from Amador County and additional charges of Penal Code 496 (A) (Possession of Stolen Property- Felony) and 11364(a) HS (Possession of Unlawful Drug Paraphernalia- Misdemeanor). He is being held with a bail of $55,000.
