On October 15, 2015 at approximately 11:15 AM an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department conducted a traffic stop of a Chevrolet HHR for expired registration on Appaloosa Road near Pinto Drive.
While speaking to the two occupants of the vehicle, the officer could smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The front seat passenger, identified as 67 year old Angels Camp Resident, Michael Airola, admitted to having some marijuana in the vehicle and that he did not possess a valid physician’s recommendation to possess the marijuana.
Both the driver of the vehicle, 40 year old Angels Camp resident, Edmund Santos, and Airola were asked to exit the vehicle so that the vehicle could be searched for drugs. Santos and Airola were searched for weapons. Santos was found to be in possession of a slungshot and was subsequently arrested for possession of the weapon.
Officers located a concealed loaded handgun in the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the handgun was stolen in a burglary that was reported to the Calaveras Sheriff’s Department on September 9, 2015.
Edmund Santos was arrested and booked in to the Calaveras County Jail for the following charges:
22210 Penal Code, Possession of an Illegal Weapon
29800(a)(1) Penal Code, Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm
25400(a)(1) Penal Code, Carrying a Concealed Firearm in a Vehicle
25850(c)(2) Penal Code, Carrying a Loaded Stolen Firearm
25850(c)(3) Penal Code, Gang Member Carrying a Loaded Firearm
186.22(a) Penal Code, Participation in a Criminal Street Gang
Michael Airola was arrested and booked in to the Calaveras County Jail for the following charge:
11359 Health and Safety Code, Possession of Marijuana for Sale
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the recovery of the stolen firearm. Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department detectives obtained a search warrant for Santos’ residence.
At approximately 11:30 PM on October 15, officers from the Angels Camp Police Department assisted deputies from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department with service of the search warrant in the 600 block of Copello Drive in Angels Camp where additional stolen firearms and narcotics were recovered. A third party, 35 year old Angels Camp resident, Alma C. Wasco, was arrested at the residence and subsequently booked into the Calaveras County Jail for the following charges:
