Burson, CA…On April 15, 2021, at approximately 1720 hours. Gabriel Fernandez was driving a Nissan Murano southbound on Burson Road just north of State Route 12. Sammie Franks was driving a 2009 Dodge 5500 tow truck, eastbound on State Route 12, west of Burson Road. Mr Fernandez drove the Nissan southbound onto State Route 12 directly into the path of the Dodge. The front of the Dodge collided into the right side of the Nissan. After the initial collision, the Dodge continued, out of control, and collided into the support structure of the overhang on the front of the Burson Market, causing it to collapse.
The Dodge then collided into an unoccupied Chevrolet Pickup that was parked under the overhang. The Dodge continued out of control and the rear collided into the rear of a Toyota Tundra that was parked just east of the Burson Market. After the initial collision, the Nissan traveled in a north easterly direction where it left the roadway and collided into a barbed wire fence, coming to rest in a field.
Mr Franks sustained major injuries and was flown from the scene to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Mr Fernandez was flown from the scene to Modesto Memorial Hospital. Mr Fernandez was arrested for DUI causing injuries to another and was booked into the Calaveras County Jail after he was released from the hospital.
