Monitor Pass Joins Ebbetts & Sonora for Temporary Closures as Storm Moves Through Region

Markleeville, Lake Alpine & Kennedy Meadows, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) closed State Route 108/Sonora Pass and State Route 4/Ebbetts Pass at about noon, and State Route 89/Monitor Pass at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2021, due to an approaching storm that is expected to linger into the weekend. There is no estimated time when the passes will be reopened, though barring unforeseen circumstances, District 10 Maintenance expects to reopen both passes prior to Memorial Day weekend.

According to our partners at the National Weather Service, mountain snow showers and isolated thundersnow are possible through Friday, May 21, 2021, which could cause travel impacts, especially at the higher mountain elevations for hikers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

This is a good time to remember these tips:
• Slow down on rain or snow slick roads to prevent spin outs.
• Allow for extra travel time.
• Carry chains at all times.
• Visibility decreases in snow showers.
• Carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing.
