Traffic Update….Caltrans to Begin Roundabout on State Route 88 and Liberty Road

Clements, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin to build a roundabout at a rural intersection in San Joaquin County to enhance the safety of motorists traveling east of Clements near the Camanche Reservoir. Work at the intersection of State Route (SR) 88 and Liberty Road is scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 15 and will continue into fall 2021.

Crews will install a single-lane, rural traffic circle to replace an intersection that has two stop signs at Liberty Road and free-flowing thru traffic on SR-88. Workers will perform intermittent one-way traffic control from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Motorists should expect 15- minute delays. The right-turn pockets on SR-88 will be closed where crews are working to allow space for their safety. Motorists will be able to turn right off SR-88 onto Liberty Road from the thru-traffic lane.

Motorists should exercise caution, as the speed limit approaching the intersection will be reduced from 55 miles per hour to 45 mph. Message signs will alert travelers.

Roundabouts have been proven to reduce serious injuries and fatalities by 80 percent. They also help cut greenhouse gas emissions by keeping vehicles moving.

Safety is Caltrans’ number one priority, and shifting this traditional rural intersection into a roundabout helps
fulfill that commitment. SR-88 serves year-round as a gateway for motorists traversing the Sierra Nevada. The highway begins at SR-99 in Stockton and continues east to the California-Nevada state line.

The $5.8 million project was awarded to O.C. Jones & Sons. Construction is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/or materials and construction related issues. For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert. www.dot.ca.gov
