Fresno, CA…With the June 7 primary just a few weeks away, we’re seeing things in full swing. Here in Calaveras, Amador & Tuolumne Counties, things have changed drastically. Gone are our old Congressional and legislative districts. In their place are new districts connecting us with far-flung communities in the Sierra foothills and Central Valley. The most notable? Our new Congressional District, the 5th Congressional District, which runs from El Dorado Hills to Fresno.
The district has connected the Gold Country, represented by Rep. Tom McClintock, with places he’s never represented.
You may have heard of Tom McClintock before, but his record leaves plenty to be desired. In 14 years in Congress, he’s seen four bills become law – two of them named post offices and another named a mountain range.
For comparison’s sake, former Reps. Devin Nunes and Jeff Denham were able to accomplish far more during their tenures.
With the change from redistricting, the new 5th District is deeply Republican. The GOP holds a 10% voter registration advantage over Democrats in the district.
That’s what makes this race – and the June Primary – so important.
We need someone running against McClintock who stands a chance of winning – a Republican who can deliver results for us: Supervisor Nathan Magsig.
Nathan Magsig has been travelling up and down all eight counties in the new 5th district, building strong relationships with local leaders and learning about the unique issues facing each county.
He’s not just talking the talk. As a local Supervisor, he’s walked the walk.
Two years ago, as his hometown burned in the Creek Fire – one of the worst wildfires in California history – he worked alongside the U.S. Forest Service and CAL Fire to ensure residents were evacuated and their fire-threatened homes were accounted for.
When was the last time you saw local leaders with their hands dirty?
As a Central Valley Mayor, he’s anticipated problems and developed solutions. Fifteen years ago, he worked to build a groundwater treatment and recharge plant that helped save the water supplies for hundreds of thousands of Valley residents and countless Valley farms that feed the world.
Nathan’s approach to focusing on local communities as our next Congressman is what sets him apart. He’s a strong believer in local control of our decisions, and its why he’s made it his mission to get to know all corners of this new district (which is double the size of the state of Connecticut).
He’s focused on unleashing the U.S. Forest Service that stop to manage our forests and reduce the risk of devastating wildfires, improving the capacity of healthcare workers in the Sierra foothills and on the Valley floor by bringing a medical school to our region, and keeping our communities safe.
If you’re a Democrat or Independent, it’s critical to understand: your vote in the June Primary could determine if we’re stuck with an ineffective McClintock for another decade or if we can bring on a Republican that will deliver results.
And if you’re a Republican, we deserve a Congressman who is principled, conservative, and still able to fight and deliver for his district.
Your vote is the most precious thing you have and it deserves to be cast wisely. I hope you’ll join me in voting for Supervisor Nathan Magsig for Congress.
