Angels Camp, CA… Robert Kroning. May 10, 1929 ~ December 21, 2022, 93 Years Old. Robert (93) died peacefully at home after a stroke. He was born in Brooklyn New York and from the age of five raised in Mount Loretto, a Catholic institution for Orphaned and Destitute Children, one of many who were victims of the Great Depression.
In that rural setting on Staten Island, children lived in group cottages and enjoyed playing in the woods and on the beach. There was a vocational school on site, but a few boys went to Tottenville High School in a nearby town, walking there through all weathers. A brilliant student, he was the valedictorian but was too shy to make a speech.
After school he joined the Navy and and was stationed on a destroyer patrolling the Mediterranean. As a World War II veteran, he earned a degree in electrical engineering on the GI bill and went to work for Bell Labs until he retired 34 years later. The research of which he was a part was responsible for computerizing the entire Bell telephone system. His work took him from New Jersey to Chicago, Phoenix and Tucson Arizona.
Robert is survived by his wife Sue, sisters Rosemary Biery and Dolores Johnson, children Regina Delo (and David), Paul Kroning (and Theresa), Edward Kroning (and Karen), Robert Kroning (and Elizabeth) and Heather James. Also by step-children Lynne Parrymore (and Henry) and Ian Woodthorpe (and Sue), fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Robert and Sue loved duplicate bridge and traveled widely to tournaments. They spent many years in Seaside Oregon before moving to Angels Camp in California in 2021 to be close to family. Robert was a lover of good books, a wordsmith, an inventor, a poet and a beloved Pop-Pop.
