Most Attended Annual Math Mini Bowl Equals Success

San Andreas, CA…Fifth and sixth grade students from all over Calaveras County gathered on May 9 at the 42nd Annual Math Mini Bowl (MMB).  A total of 139 students from 10 schools attended the event. This MMB consists of three different competitions, challenging students to flex their math skills. This year’s event was the highest attended math bowl to date.  All countywide student events, including the Math Mini Bowl, are operated by the Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE).

The event was held at the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks gymnasium in San Andreas. With building enthusiasm, the mathletes energetically emerged into the competition arena from behind the scenes as each of their schools was announced in true athletic fashion

Participating schools included: Albert Michelson Elementary, Avery Middle School, Christian Family Learning Center, Hazel Fischer Elementary, Jenny Lind Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary, Mokelumne Hill Elementary, San Andreas Elementary, Toyon Middle School, and West Point Elementary.

Students start the event with the individual test, the Blitz, which consists of 50 questions. They had 45 minutes to complete this test. The second test, called the Huddle, is a two-person test with 25 questions, students pair up and complete the questions together in 30 minutes or less. The final test, the Bomb, is a five-member team test with 25 questions requiring students to complete multiple math computations to find the final answer. All tests were taken on Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform.

Energy levels soared high in the gymnasium that was full of smiles, perplexed looks, and nervous chatter. Scores were determined based on accuracy first and completion time second.

Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools Karen Vail greeted the students as the event got underway.  “The students had such a great time; the excitment was palatable during the event. High attendance was matched with equally high scores.” stated Debbie Strand, CCOE’s Coordinator of Communications and Student Events.

Fifth grade first place winners were Liam Hungerford on the Blitz from Hazel Fischer Elementary; Hungerford and his teammate Samuel Baker took first in the Huddle.  The Bomb fifth grade first place team attend Albert Michelson Elementary. Sixth grade first place winners were Riley Garren on the Blitz from Toyon Middle School; Charley Imlach and Savannah Petrie paired up from Avery Middle School and won first in the Huddle; and Avery Middle School sixth graders took first in the Bomb team test.
