Sonora Pass Opened at 1:30 p.m. Today!

Tuolumne County, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) formally opened Sonora Pass on State Route 108 today at 1:30 p.m. after two months of work. Sonora Pass, at 9,624 feet of elevation, is the second highest point on the state highway system maintained by Caltrans.

District 10 crews began working to open the pass on April 3, 2023, when they started clearing the road of the snow that accumulated during this past winter. The road is closed each winter from the Sno-Park for approximately 28 miles to the summit. District 9 crews began working from the east side of the summit to clear the road all the way to U.S. Highway 395.

Along the way, crews found mudslides, rockslides, avalanches, tree debris, and flooding. All those hazards were cleaned up and fixed before the pass was officially ready for the traveling public.

Caltrans encourages all motorists to continue to Be Work Zone Alert. For the latest road conditions, visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov.
