Angels Camp, CA…On Friday, June 30, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m., deputies from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Glory Hole Marina, located at the Melones Reservoir in rural Angels Camp, in response to a call regarding a boating accident. A 35-year-old man from Murphys suffered severe injuries. When deputies arrived, they learned that the victim, while attempting to dock his vessel with a houseboat, fell overboard at the front of the boat. He was then passed over by the boat and came into contact with the boat’s motor propeller, resulting in significant injuries. Medical personnel provided attention to the injured individual, and he was subsequently flown to a Valley Hospital for further treatment. This case is still under investigation.
At an unrelated event, on Saturday, July 1st, 2023, at approximately 7:25 p.m., a 35-year-old man reportedly jumped into the water at the Camp Nine Bridge, which spans over the Stanislaus River leading into the New Melones Reservoir. Tragically, the individual disappeared beneath the water’s surface, prompting an emergency call to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency personnel responded to the area, met with the reporting parties, and conducted a search for the missing man. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
Search efforts remain ongoing by members of the Calaveras County Marine Safety Division, Tuolumne County Marine Safety, and New Melones Rangers, utilizing specialized equipment.
This marks the second drowning victim in two weeks at the Melones Reservoir, and we urge the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines when enjoying recreational activities near bodies of water. While the New Melones Reservoir and its surrounding areas offer natural beauty and recreational opportunities, it is crucial to prioritize personal safety and make responsible choices.
