Sonora Man Loses His Life in Vehicle vs Pedestrian Collision on Mono Way

Sonora, CA…On January 28, 2024, at approximately 7:55 pm, 65-year-old Thomas Solis of Sonora was walking eastbound on Mono Way, within the number 2 lane, east of Cordelia Avenue. Mr. Solis was wearing dark clothing, facing away from traffic, during hours of darkness in an area that is not illuminated by streetlights. At that same time, 39-year-old Joseph Brinegar of Sonora was driving a GMC Acadia eastbound on Mono Way at approximately 40-45 MPH, approaching Mr. Solis’ location. Mr. Brinegar did not see that Mr. Solis was in his lane before the right front of his vehicle struck Mr. Solis.

As a result of the crash, Mr. Solis sustained major injuries. Upon the arrival of CHP officers, lifesaving measures were attempted, however Mr. Solis succumbed to his injures at the scene. Mr. Brinegar was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured. This crash is still under investigation.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected of being a factor in this crash.
