San Andreas, CA…On April 20th, 2024, a correctional officer was physically attacked and seriously injured by an incarcerated person. At about 9:00 AM, suspect Casey James Martin, age 33, from Arnold, refused to follow the orders of the correctional staff to return to his cell as required. The correctional staff attempted to gain compliance through verbal communication; however, Suspect Martin refused their lawful orders. Additional correctional officers entered the housing unit to assist in talking with Suspect Martin to gain his compliance. Despite the attempts to gain compliance through de-escalation, Suspect Martin became more aggressive with the staff. It became clear to the staff that Suspect Martin was not going to comply.
The staff warned Suspect Martin that they would use a less-lethal (Taser) device to gain compliance if he did not follow their lawful commands. Suspect Martin complied and began following instructions. As the correctional staff approached, he turned and began grabbing at the staff. At this time, a correctional officer deployed the taser; however, Suspect Martin was not affected and continued to actively attack the officers.
During his attack, Suspect Martin struck the staff with closed fists, causing one officer to lose their footing and fall to the ground. Suspect Martin got on top of the officer and continued to deliver strikes, stating he was going to kill the officer. The other correctional officers were forced to use impact devices (batons) to stop Suspect Martin’s felonious actions. During the physical attack, Suspect Martin was eventually subdued and placed in his cell. Suspect Martin caused a traumatic injury to one of the correctional officers.
The correctional officer was transported to a hospital for treatment for the injury caused by Suspect Martin. In addition to his original charges, Suspect Martin was booked on additional charges: Penal Code 203 Mayhem (felony), Penal Code 69 (A) Obstruct / Resist Officer (felony), Penal Code 243(C)(1) Battery on Police Officer with Injury (felony) and Penal Code 422(A) Criminal Threats.
