Caltrans on Reopening of Ebbetts Pass for 2024 Season

Lake Alpine, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is pleased to announce the formal reopening of Ebbetts Pass for the 2024 season as of Wednesday, May 9, 2024. Our Woodfords and Camp Connell Maintenance crews made great progress with their snow removal operations this week to reopen State Route 4 prior to Memorial Day.

Ebbetts Pass was formally closed to traffic for the 2023-24 winter season in early January and the closure gates have largely remained at Lake Alpine and Raymond Meadows for most of the winter.

This season while clearing Ebbetts Pass our maintenance crews encountered snow levels of 10-16ft in locations along with down trees, debris, and some extremely narrow one-lane corridors. Our Caltrans Woodfords and Camp Connell crews averaged about a mile per day with their snow removal operations and were ultimately able to clear approximately twenty-six miles of roadway this season.

Caltrans top priority is ensuring the safety of the traveling public and our workers along with supporting the economic vitality of our local communities. We are happy to have reopen State Route 4 for the season without incident and to allow early public access for recreation activities along Ebbetts Pass.

Caltrans urges motorists to still use caution while driving the Sierra Mountain pass routes and watch for icy road surfaces in the overnight and early morning hours. For the latest highway conditions visit Quickmap.dot.ca.gov, download our QuickMap mobile app, tune your car radio to Caltrans Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) at 530 AM, 1610 AM, or call the Caltrans Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).

For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert and Move Over to give Caltrans maintenance crews room to work.
