Copperopolis, CA…On February 25th, 2025, at around 9:30 p.m., a Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to conduct an enforcement stop of a black motorcycle on Reeds Turnpike near Copper Town Square in Copperopolis, CA due to its non-functioning taillight. The motorcycle driver refused to comply and tried to evade the deputy by dangerously maneuvering across Highway 4 onto Hodson Road, reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour. The deputy continued to pursue the motorcycle as it entered the Diamond XX sub-division, with the bike reaching speeds of about 55 miles per hour. The motorcycle driver continued to flee on various roads within Diamond XX while driving at high speeds in the opposite lane. The pursuit then led back to Hodson Road, across Highway 4, and onto Little John Road.
While fleeing on Little John Road, the motorcycle’s driver reached 90 miles per hour and continued to Quail Hill Road, where it fled in the opposite direction of travel on the one-way road. The motorcycle continued to Arrowhead Street, again traveling in the opposite direction of traffic on this one-way road. The motorcycle reached speeds of 75 miles per hour and endangered a vehicle traveling on Arrowhead Street in the correct direction of travel. The citizen observed the sheriff’s emergency vehicle lights and pulled off of the road. The motorcycle driver fled across Quail Hill Road numerous times in the opposite direction before turning onto Copper Cove Drive and heading toward O’Byrne’s Ferry Road.
The motorcycle turned into a dirt lot near the Rocket Gas Station, and the bike maneuvered through traffic barriers, preventing the deputy from continuing the pursuit. By this time, a fellow deputy, California Highway Patrol officers, and an aviation unit from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office were in the area. Shortly after, CHP officers located the motorcycle in Tuolumne County, where it continued to flee. CHP officers notified Calaveras deputies that the bike had returned to Calaveras via O’Byrne’s Ferry Road and had entered the Copper Meadows subdivision. The aviation unit, which was now monitoring the pursuit in the air, reported that the driver had parked the motorcycle and had jumped over a fence into the backyard of a residence on Copper Crest Drive.
CHP officers and deputies surrounded the property and began searching the backyard. The suspect was located hiding in a chicken coop. The suspect was instructed to exit the chicken coop and follow the officers’ directions. The suspect complied with the directions and surrendered without further resistance. At this time, deputies identified the suspect as Jacob Schulte. A search of the chicken coop revealed a plastic baggie containing 3.4 grams of methamphetamine.
Suspect Jacob Schulte was arrested and booked at the Calaveras County Jail on charges of Evading a Peace Officer with Wanton Disregard for Safety (Felony), Evading a Peace Officer: Wrong Way Driver (Felony), Possess a Controlled Substance with 2 Priors (Felony), Driving with a Suspended License (Misdemeanor), Excessive Speed (Infraction), Failure to Signal (Infraction), Non-functioning Taillight (Infraction), and one misdemeanor bench warrant for failure to appear.
