Mr. Mark Magellan 1949 ~ 2025

Santa Cruz, CA…Mr. Mark Magellan August 5, 1949 ~ June 16, 2025 (age 75). Marcus “Mark” Kent Magellan, a 30-year Navy Veteran serving both in the Vietnam and Desert Storm war efforts, dies at 74. On June 16, 2025, Mark passed peacefully after a long illness. He was surrounded by his beloved wife and family members.

Mark was born on August 5, 1949 in Stockton, California to Emily May Doris Bailey and Billie Beverly Magellan.
He grew up in Stockton and attended high school where he was in the band, playing the bass clarinet. He graduated in 1967 and thereafter attended Delta College (where he continued to play in the band) and graduated in 1969.

He then served as a counselor at Camp Redwood Glen where he met the love of his life Kathie Shultz to whom he married. He enlisted in the Navy in 1969 where he actively served until 1972 during the Vietnam War campaign as a Chief Petty Officer. He remained with the Navy as a reservist (as a Master Chief) until his discharge in 2009.

During that time, Mark was recalled during Desert Storm and worked in the naval depot in Concord, inspecting and labeling weapons deployed in the Middle East.  Following Mark’s active Navy duty in 1972, he began to work at his father’s music store “Bill’s Music,” that he eventually took over and ran with this brother Barton until his retirement in 2019.

Bill’s Music was a prominent Stockton business providing musical instrument rentals through-out the local school district. Mark and his family moved to Santa Cruz during retirement where he spent his time riding his bike around town, kayaking with his son Jason, strolling the boardwalk and enjoying his long-time work-working hobby.

Mark is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathie, his daughter Karen Layton, his son Jason Magellan, his two granddaughters Gwyneth and Morgan Layon, sisters Lonni Hodge and Melani Bowers, and sister-in-law, Linda Magellan.

Private funeral service arrangements are being made. A celebration of life event will be scheduled for a later time.
