Tuolumne & Calaveras Counties, CA…Governor Gavin Newsom today issued an executive order expediting the removal and cleanup of debris and household hazardous materials (HHM) from properties affected by the TCU Lightning Complex fires in Tuolumne County. The executive order accelerates cleanup of impacted properties, while ensuring public health and environmental protections, and reflects the Governor’s ongoing efforts to address local concerns, provide tools to accelerate rebuilding, and allow communities to recover safely.

“We will continue to look for ways to support Californian’s impacted by the TCU Lighting Complex Fires clean up and rebuild safely. This executive order responds directly to requests from local officials and community feedback, to help speed up recovery and protect communities from hazardous materials.”

Following the September fires, Governor Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency in Tuolumne County, unlocking additional state assistance under the California Disaster Assistance Act. The proclamation directed the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to partner with county officials on debris removal and watershed recovery efforts aimed at preventing toxic burn scar debris from contaminating local waterways.

To support survivors, the state helped establish a Local Assistance Center that connected residents with critical services and recovery resources. Additionally, Governor Newsom secured federal support through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), providing low-interest disaster loans to help homeowners, renters, and small businesses rebuild.
