Mountain Ranch, CA…On October 30, 2025, Michelle “Shelly” Anne Hie, of Mountain Ranch, was surrounded by love, as she slipped into the Great Beyond.
Jeanne and Jack Meyers welcomed their precious daughter, Michelle, into this world June 12, 1949, in San Mateo, California. She was the baby sister of two older brothers. Her family moved to Sacramento, not long after, where Shelly started grade school. As a small child she discovered her love of water and at just five years old she began swimming competitively.
Michelle and her family left California, to live in Chicago, where she swam for her new school. After two years in the Windy City, her family moved to Lafayette, California. Shelly graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1967. She continued swimming while attending junior college. At one point she briefly held the record for the 100-yard freestyle.
Everything changed for her when she met her future husband, Ron Hie. She moved to Tahoe where she began working for Pacific Bell Telephone Company. September 25, 1976, Michelle Meyers married Ron and became Mrs. Ronald Hie.
These were happy days, and their joy was compounded in March 1979, when their first child, Kimberly, was born. That same year, Ron found work in Calaveras County, so the young family pulled stakes and headed for Gold Country. Their second daughter, Rochelle, completed the happy family unit when she was born in August of 1980.
Michelle enjoyed volunteering in the community and worked several local part-time jobs. In 1984 she began her career at the Calaveras County Welfare Department. She loved helping people and enjoyed the new challenges each day. Michelle’s hard work and integrity were recognized, and she was selected to be Calaveras County’s first Welfare Fraud Investigator. She was partnered with Dennis Downum in the new position. When Dennis moved on, she continued to head the department with other partners over the years. She devoted 30 years of conscientious effort and professionalism to her position until her retirement.
As if she wasn’t busy enough she and her husband decided to run the Calaveras Pines in Railroad Flat. Her evenings and weekends were filled with trips to town for supplies, making food, serving the patrons, and managing personnel.
Busy? Beyond busy! This woman never stopped doing. On top of working for Calaveras County and running the Pines, she gave freely of herself to the community she loved. She contributed her time to many organizations, including 4-H, Grad Nights, Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army, among others.
She finally decided to slow down. She wanted to spend more time with her family. So, in 2014 she retired from her position with Calaveras County. The following year she retired from the Calaveras Pines. She spent her retirement living life a little slower. She volunteered at the American Legion, in Glencoe and continued to volunteer anywhere she could help.
She was a devoted and loving wife to Ronald for 43 years until she lost him in 2019. In her role as a mother, she really did shine! The love and support she gave her two daughters knew no limits and came with no conditions. She was the most loving and understanding mother imaginable.
In 2000 Shelly was overwhelmed with happiness to become a grandmother (Nana) for the first time! She would experience that joy five more times. Her Nana career was her favorite job. Loving, nurturing and adoring her six grandchildren filled her life, mind and heart.
She is survived by her older brothers William “Bill” Meyers and Rich Meyers, oldest daughter Kimberly, youngest daughter Rochelle, oldest grand daughter Kaya Hie, Miale Hie-Kosta, Carley Bruckner, Aidan Bruckner, A.J. Kosta, and Adelyn Sweet.
