Mariposa County, CA…Temporary Full Closure of State Route 140 in Mariposa County.  Caltrans to Begin Debris Slide Removal Work.  The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued a temporary full closure of State Route 140 (SR-140) near Incline in Mariposa County as the result of a 100 cubic yard debris slide event.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026, a debris slide occurred along SR-140 across both lanes resulting in an immediate full two-hour closure of the highway. Together with Mariposa CHP, Caltrans established road closures west of the slide at Bear Creek Bridge in Briceburg and to the east of the slide at Yosemite Cedar Lodge in Incline to remove the debris.

Caltrans was able to safely re-open the highway yesterday as of 12:00 p.m., however, under close observation additional movement and debris fall were detected. As a result, Caltrans and CHP took precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the traveling public, maintenance workers and first responders by reestablishing the full closure of SR-140 as of 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 12th with no estimated time of re-opening. The temporary closure will remain in place while Caltrans Geotechnical and Highway Operations staff further assess the slope and road conditions.

In response to the slide event Caltrans has notified the local school districts, sheriff and police, CAL-Fire, Yosemite National Park (YNP), Yosemite Area Transportation System (YARTS), and the local elected officials. Caltrans will have a temporary closure in place on SR-140 while work is performed to further assess the slope and perform any needed debris removal or repairs to the roadway.

Caltrans will be providing real-time updates via our social media accounts, news releases, and through our Caltrans QuickMap app for mobile devices. Motorists will be provided with closure and detour route updates with use of overhead changeable message signs (CMS) along State Routes, along with weekly traffic advisories.

In the meantime, Caltrans is asking motorists to avoid this stretch of highway until debris removal work is finished, to exercise patience, and seek alternative detour routes along SR-41 and SR-120 into and out of Yosemite National Park. Caltrans’ top priority is the safety of the traveling public, our partner agencies, staff, and the contractor performing the debris removal and highway repairs.
