Update from Caltrans…Yes, Ebbetts Pass is Open Even if Your Phone Says it Isn’t

Alpine County, CA…The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) formally reopened State Route 4 (SR-4)/Ebbetts Pass from Lake Alpine to Raymond Meadows as of 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Caltrans is advising motorists to use1-800-427-ROAD (7623) and Caltrans Highway Advisory Radio at 530AM & 1610AM for accurate travel information along State Route 4 through Calaveras & Alpine Counties this weekend.

The SR-4 road closure information currently displayed on Apple Maps, Google Maps, & Caltrans QuickMap is outdated and inaccurate. Caltrans is working with our partners to address the problem and will alert motorists once a solution has been implemented.

Caltrans urges motorists to still use caution while driving the Sierra Mountain pass routes and for the safety of our workers please Be Work Zone Alert and Move Over for our maintenance and construction crews.
