San Andreas, CA…Charles Edward “Ned” Dalton May 14, 1933 ~ June 16, 2026 (age 93). Charles Edward “Ned” Dalton aged 93, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026 in San Andreas, CA. Shortly after a hip replacement surgery from a fall Ned had in May, he died at the rehabilitation center.
Ned was born on May 14, 1933 in County Carlow, Ireland and was the fourth of 11 children to Charles and Kathleen Dalton nee Redmond. Ned grew up on a farm with his family and then in 1952 moved to Tipperary. Ned was fond of farming and had a love of horses! After his father passed away in 1954, the family sold the farm. In 1959, Ned ventured to Toronto, Canada where he married Aine Tierney from Fethard, County Tipperary.
In 1961, Ned and his wife moved to San Francisco and lived in a number of places in the Bay Area before settling in Oakland. While a mechanic and in construction by trade, Ned developed a love for dogs and so he would breed and show Blue Kerries, Wheaton Terriers, and his prized smooth haired Fox Terriers. His dog “The Brat” won first place in 1980. In those days you would always find him with a coffee, a cigarette and good conversation. While living in Oakland in the 70s he and his wife liked to spoil his local nieces and nephews, Emmett, Deirdre, Bill, and Mary as though they were his own children.
In 1991, Ned married his second wife Janet Turner. They moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina and lived there until her death in 2011.
Ned’s final 15 years were spent quietly and sometimes not-so-quietly at his niece’s ranch in San Andreas, CA namely The Dalton Ranch. Ned regularly enjoyed a glass of wine, a cigar, and good conversation with a friend. The Dalton Ranch became a wedding venue, so many guests from the festivities would find their way to talk to Ned. Ned made friends easily with his frank Irish charm and a warm smile, always sitting on the porch with a plume of smoke and an engaged presence ready to talk about any subject. He was a very loyal and beloved uncle who looked after the ranch diligently for his deceased brother Jim, and niece Deirdre.
Ned is survived by five siblings, Vincent Dalton, Fr. Desmond Dalton, Kathleen Deegan (Paul Deegan), Lily Hagan (Bill Hagan), and Mary Wingrove (Graham Wingrove), as well as numerous nieces & nephews, and close friends including Dion Rudd, Anna, Gay Callen, George Stone, Susie Miller, Mike & Eileen D’Arcy, Bobbi Severson, Greg & Nuala Jordan, Jerry & Peggy Lucas and so many more.
A special thanks to Lily Hagan, Malinda Bissell, Dion Rudd, Gay Callan, George Stone, Susie Miller, Clayton Stanley, and Julie LeBoeuf for taking care of Ned in his final years. May he rest in peace.
