San Andreas, CA…Meet Bumper (A061077), a male Pointer, a little over 1 year old and weighing 57 pounds. Bumper has already overcome quite a lot in his young life. He arrived at Calaveras County Animal Services with a fractured pelvis after being hit by a car and spent the next couple of months resting while staff and volunteers cared for him. Now healed enough to begin getting out and about again, Bumper seems determined to make up for lost time—and judging by the smile that rarely leaves his face, he couldn’t be happier about it.

Throughout his recovery, Bumper remained unfailingly sweet and affectionate with the people caring for him. Now that his world has expanded beyond his kennel, that same happy temperament is on full display. He’s attentive to his people, loves affection, and approaches his newfound freedom with infectious enthusiasm.

One of the happiest discoveries has been how much Bumper enjoys meeting other dogs. While confined during his recovery, he sometimes reacted when dogs passed his kennel, leaving staff unsure how he would feel about canine companionship. Once he was able to meet dogs properly, the answer became clear: Bumper has done beautifully with a variety of new canine friends and seems delighted to expand his social circle.

Bumper already knows “sit,” is motivated by treats, and appears to be housetrained. He’ll need to ease gradually back into more strenuous activity as he regains his full strength, but he has all the makings of a wonderful companion: affectionate, attentive, friendly, and eager to enjoy everything he missed while recuperating.

Bumper’s first victory was healing. His next one will be finding a family of his own. After months of watching life from the sidelines, this handsome young dog is ready for the chapter where he gets to live it.

All dogs available for adoption at the Calaveras Animal Shelter are up to date on their routine vaccinations and will be microchipped. All unaltered dogs must be spayed or neutered before they can go home with you.

Animal Services has a Fee Flexibility Program!
When the shelter is over 80% capacity, adoption fees are reduced: just $40 for dogs and $30 for cats. Cats who arrive at the shelter already altered can be adopted for only $10. With the 55-5-5 Program, adopters age 55+ can adopt a pet over 5 years old for just $5.
