Burson, CA…On 08/02/16 at approx. 9:00 PM Calaveras Sheriff’s Communications Center received a 911 call from a reporting party stating that a male adult, identified as Troy Casteel (47 years of age) out of Burson, was involved in a dispute with a family member at a residence on the 5000 block of Southworth Road in Burson. During the dispute Mr. Casteel allegedly displayed a handgun and threatened to kill the family member. The family member was able to escape the house, but a two year child was left behind with Casteel. Sheriff’s deputies responded and attempted to have Casteel meet them outside the house, but were unsuccessful.
Calaveras Sheriff’s SWAT team and the Hostage Negotiations Team (HNT) were summoned to the scene, at which time HNT began trying to communicate with Casteel over a loudspeaker. After a couple of hours Casteel walked outside and was taken into custody without incident. The child was safely recovered, without injury, and turned over to family members.
Suspect Casteel was booked into the Calaveras County Jail on the charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon (felony), Criminal Threats (felony), Cruelty to a Child (felony), and Battery (misdemeanor).
