Baroque Chamber Orchestra Saturday, October 15, 7:30 pm Cowboy Country Church, Sonora Sunday, October 16, 3 pm Pine Grove Community Church Some of the Baroque era’s greatest hits will be performed by the Friends of Music’s Baroque Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Henrik Jul Hansen. The program includes the first Water Music Suite and the Concerto Grosso op. 3, no. 2 in Bb of G.F. Handel. Corina Stoian performs the Violin Concerto in E of J.S. Bach and joins flutist Sandra Betti and harpsichordist Ron Brickman as soloists in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. (Admission charged)

The Friction Quartet

Sutter Creek Theatre

The Friction Quartet, the dynamic quartet of youthful players from the San Francisco Bay Area, returns for a special concert with international concert pianist Jenny Q Chai and acclaimed percussionist/composer Andy Akiho. They will perform the world premiere of Akiho’s Piano Quintet, commissioned for the Friction Quartet by Chamber Music of America. Also on the program: the Piano Quintet of Robert Schumann and Akiho’s exhilarating quintet for strings and steelpan. A reception in honor of the artists will follow the performance.

Corina Stoian leads an ensemble of nine players (four strings and five winds) in a performance of the beautiful Nonet of Joseph Rheinberger, a contemporary of Brahms. The program continues with the Andante and Variations for two pianos, two cellos and horn of Robert Schuman and La Valse of Maurice Ravel, as arranged for two pianos by the composer. With pianists Diane Day and Ron Brickman. (Concert rescheduled from last season.)

Violin/Piano Recital
Saturday, February 18, 3 pm
Sutter Creek Theatre

Romanian-born concert violinist Corina Stoian celebrates the 10th anniversary of her American debut in this recreation of her historic recital of February 2006 at the Sutter Creek Theatre. Works on the program include the great “Kreutzer” Sonata of Beethoven, Sonata No. 3 in C minor of Grieg, Danse Macabre of Saint Saëns and selections of George Gershwin for violin and piano. With Ron Brickman, piano. A reception will follow.

Chamber Orchestra Concert: All-American Program

Henrik Jul Hansen leads the Chamber Orchestra of the Friends of Music in a program of American music, anchored by a performance of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring in the original 13-player version. Also Barber’s Adagio for Strings, the Suite for String Orchestra of Arthur Foote, the riotous second movement from the Piano Trio of Charles Ives, Copland’s Quiet City with English horn and trumpet, and the composer’s festive Hoe Down from the ballet Rodeo.

Chamber Music Concert

A concert of chamber music features the String Quintet in G minor, K 516, of W. A. Mozart, one of the composer’s finest chamber works, as performed by five of the Sacramento area’s top string players. The second half features our Distinguished Young Artist of the Year, bass-trombonist Rudi Hoehn, principal with the Santa Barbara Symphony, performing “New Orleans” of Eugene Bozza and other works. With special guest tenor trombonist Craig Beattie, Juilliard-trained and now a freelance musician in the Houston area. (Concert rescheduled from last season.)

Chamber Music Concert

Our final concert of the season features violinist Marie Flexer and cellist Stephanie Chiao, with Ron Brickman at the piano. The program includes the Sonata for violin and cello of Maurice Ravel, the Piano Trio in Eb, Hob. V. 29 of Joseph Haydn, Rachmaninoff’s Elegiac Trio in G minor, and the wild and crazy Variations on “Tico-Tico” by Lucio Bruno-Videla. Soprano Alexis Magarò returns to sing three ravishing songs of Rachmaninoff and the sublime “Dream With Me” of Leonard Bernstein with piano and cello obbligato.
