Local Turkey Trot Marks 10 Year Tradition

Murphys, CA… In 2006, Brian Klassen and some of his running buddies thought it would be a good idea to get in a jog prior to indulging in their Thanksgiving feast.

Ten years later, the Klassen Klassic Turkey Trot has become one of Calaveras Counties most treasured annual events. The event has grown exponentially over the years and now brings together about 1,000 people, mostly locals, but also people from the Valley and Bay areas. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the success, we live in a generous and close knit community,” commented Brian.

A canned food drive has brought in more than 12 tons of food for local food banks. Additionally, each year the Klassens pick a local charity or family in need and raise funds through t-shirts sales which are 100% sponsored by about 20 local businesses. Over the course of a decade almost $20,000 has been donated. This year’s recipient is the Peter Speno Memorial Fund. Peter was a well known Murphys restauranteur and maker of the “World’s Best Pesto.” Peter has recently passed away.

No registration is required although an entry fee of canned or non-pershable food is requested. Cash donations are also accepted. T-shirts will be sold, in limited quantities at the event.
