Jackson, CA…Many homeowners in Amador County have ornamental shrubs in their landscape or garden. Many might also be considering adding to the shrubs and have questions about which ones to choose. If this sounds like you, plan on attending the UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County class “Selection and Care of Ornamental Shrubs and Roses” on January 28, 2017. This class will discuss various ornamental shrubs that grow throughout Amador County and the season in which they bloom. We will also discuss the proper time to prune these shrubs, as not all of them are pruned at the same time.
The second part of the class will discuss the most popular types of roses which can be grown in a landscape or garden setting in Amador County (Grandiflora, Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, Polyantha, Climbing, and Antique). We will also discuss how to best care for your roses throughout the year, including planting, irrigating, fertilizing, and pruning. We will also be discussing common diseases and pests of roses, and how to manage them in a way that is consistent with Integrated Pest Management. We will be demonstrating how to prune a rose, and then we will be raffling it off to a lucky member of the audience. Hand-outs will be available. The class is free and open to the public. No reservations are required. All classes are held in the GSA building at 12200-B Airport Rd. in Jackson from 9am to Noon.
