Celebrated Jumping Frogs Are On Their Annual Goodwill Tour

Angels Camp, CA..(Frogtown, USA)..Calaveras County’s Celebrated Jumping Frogs are in the midst of their annual goodwill tour. The frogs and their entourage of Frog Jump Committee members/handlers hit the road every year to build excitement for the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee- this year’s event is May 18-21 at Frogtown in Angels Camp. The tour circles the county and is highlighted by a trip to Sacramento May 10 for the annual State Capitol Frog Jump sponsored by Senator Tom Berryhill, who represents local Senate District 14. Last year more than 50 elected officials, legislative staffers and media representatives vied for bragging rights and the opportunity to move on to the Jumping Frog Jubilee Grand Finals on May 21.

The local appearance circuit begins May 1 with a visit to Hazel Fischer Elementary School in Arnold at 1:30 p.m. On May 2, the tours stops first at West Point Elementary School for an assembly at 10:30 a.m., and then moves on to Rail Road Flat Elementary School at noon.

The celebrated jumpers have three appearances on May 3 – in San Andreas at My Own School at
9 a.m. and at Mt. Oaks School at 11:30 a.m. and then on to Christian Family Learning Center in Angels Camp at 2:30 p. m. On May 5, the tour visits San Andreas Elementary at 8 a.m.

May 9 is another busy day for the group – they stop off at Mark Twain Elementary School in Angels Camp at 8:30 a. m. and then head to San Andreas for the annual Government Center Frog Jump, pitting county departments against each other beginning at 11 a. m.

The tour winds down with appearances at Foothill Village in Angels Camp on May 12 at 10:30 a.m. and Mokelumne Hill Elementary School at 1:30 p.m. on May 15. The frogs travel in luxury in the distinctive Frogmobile, a van wrapped with frog graphics – courtesy of donations from Angels Sewer and Drain and the Wintercreek Foundation. Graphics are by Eric Calialgro.

In addition to exhibition jumping, the frogs and their handlers have lots to talk about at the tour appearances. This is the 31st anniversary of the Frog Jump World’s Record which was set by the late Lee Giudici and his frog Rosie the Ribiter in 1986 with an unprecedented jump of 21 feet, five and ¾ inches.

Students will be especially happy to learn that Thursday, May 18 is Kids Day at the Fair, with free admission and free frog jumping for kids 12 and under. For complete details, go to www.frogtown.org
