Car Theft Suspect Arrested in Paloma

Paloma, CA…On 11-16-17 at approx. 0445 hours, an anonymous citizen called 9-1-1 to report trespassers. Upon deputies’ arrival, a male and female were located inside a garage. The male suspect told deputies that his vehicle was stuck in the mud nearby. Deputies found a truck and trailer blocking a drive-way.

Sheriff’s deputies determined that the truck had been stolen from the Linden Irrigation District yard in San Joaquin County sometime overnight. California Highway Patrol responded to take the vehicle theft report and our local CHP Officers assisted with the vehicle recovery. The female subject was questioned and released at the scene.

When deputies attempted to handcuff the suspect, he resisted arrest, causing injury to one of the deputies. The suspect, Brett Schmidt (age 26 from Modesto), was taken into custody and booked into the Calaveras County Jail on charges of 602(m)PC – trespass/enter structure without consent, 148(a)(1)PC – resisting arrest, and 10851CVC – vehicle theft on $60,000 bail.
