Angels Camp, CA…Be the first to taste the best-in-show, double-gold and gold-medal winners of the 2018 Sierra Foothills Wine Competition. The Calaveras Winegrape Alliance (CWA) in partnership with the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and the Calaveras County Fairgrounds will be hosting a Grand Tasting Wine Event at 6pm on Wednesday May 16 in the Wine Pavillion at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds. This event will kick off the Calaveras County Fair and recognize the accomplishments of the Calaveras County gold-medal winners by offering tastings of the winning wines as well as delectable catered appetizers.

Every year, a team of 25 esteemed wine experts from the Sacramento region and the Bay Area come to the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in April to judge in a blind tasting of professional and amateur wines submitted by winemakers from Calaveras County and the neighboring counties. The Calaveras County best-in-show, double-gold and gold-medal winners are invited to attend the Grand Tasting to show off their wines and be honored for their achievement.

The wine pavilion features an exhibit space that includes an interactive, self-guided experience showcasing sustainable practices in viticulture and winemaking throughout the days of the fair. There will be lectures on growing grapes sustainably and soil and microclimate impacts on wine. Special guests will include wildlife experts and their predatory birds, vineyard goats, a vermiculture display and live bugs used for sustainable practices. In addition, local agricultural experts and Master Gardeners will be hosting various workshops and lectures on topics such as holistic grazing, use of native plants, creating beneficial hedgerows and more.

Tickets to the Grand Tasting Wine Event are $40 per person and must be purchased at www.calaveraswines.org or through the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce website at www.calaveras.org. The event will be held at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds Wine Pavilion located at 101 Frog Town Road in Angels Camp from 6pm-8pm.
