Altaville Schoolhouse Lecture & Tour

Angels Camp, CA…Join us in the Angels Camp Carriage House at the museum to learn about our Charming Altaville Schoolhouse. Sunday, April 7, 2019. 1:30 p.m. refreshments, 2 – 3 p.m. lecture. Altaville Grammar School is one of the great architectural and cultural treasures of Calaveras County. Built in 1858 and funded by local residents, this brick Greek revival jewel is one of the oldest surviving grammar schools in California.

The Angels Camp Museum welcomes you to come and hear about the schoolhouse from retired Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools Kathy Northington. Kathy will highlight the school’s history and share stories from students who attended class there.

Many former students still live in the area as the schoolhouse closed its doors a mere 68 years ago. The schoolhouse will be open for touring directly after the lecture. Parking is available in the small lot adjacent to the school, on highway 49 and also in the CVS shopping area. See you there!
