Angels Camp, CA…Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, the first Open and Affirming church in Calaveras County, will be celebrating its 150th anniversary serving Angels Camp and Calaveras county this Sunday, with a 10:00 AM worship service and catered noon luncheon. All who are friends of “the little church with the great big heart” are welcome to attend. Music during the worship service will include hymns written as early as the 18th century and on down the years to hymns from the late 20th century. Pastor Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Armstrong’s sermon will be “Birth, Life, and Restoration.” Following the worship service, music will be performed prior to lunch by Mountain Melody and Yeshua’s House, and singing led by Dr. Darryl Hollinger, music director at First Congregational Church of Murphys.
Union has a long history of service in Calaveras County. John Anderson, the late Pastor Emeritus, was very active in getting Calaveras Habitat for Humanity started. During the Butte Fire, Pastor Armstrong and council member Gail Williams served as members of the spiritual care team, and the church, with the assistance of Sierra Quilt Guild, “adopted” two families that had been completely burned out, and, through the UCC national program “Neighbors in Need,” was able to provide approximately $4000 in goods to fire victims. Last year, during the Camp Fire, the church provided warm gloves for 200 fire fighters. Union is currently active serving on the Calaveras County Homeless Coalition, and in supporting the Resource Center, Sierra Hope, and the 12-Step community. Currently ten groups meet at the church during each week. Our favorite saying about our church is “We are small, but we are mighty!”
Whatever your connection with Union Congregational Church, we invite you to join us for our 150th Anniversary celebration. If you plan to come to the luncheon, please RSVP to Gail Williams at 209-559-1805 by Saturday.
