Major Injuries to Chico Man & Possible Charges as Well in Hwy 120 Collision

Groveland, CA…On October 26, 2019 at approximately 2:02 pm, 53-year-old John Mossett of Chico, was driving his 2017 Ram 2500 pickup eastbound on State Route 120 east of Grizzly Road (New Priest Grade) with his passengers; 50-year-old Tammy Mossett of Chico and 11-year-old Brandon Mossett of Chico. They were traveling directly to the rear of a 2015 Peterbilt big rig hauling a gasoline tanker being driven by, 64-year-old John Peeples of Salida, at approximately 18 to 20 miles per hour. Mr. Mossett made a passing movement over the double yellow centerline on a blind curve around the big rig. Mr. Mossett accelerated his vehicle to approximately 35 to 40 miles per hours while passing the big rig and observed an approaching vehicle traveling westbound on State Route 120. The driver of the approaching vehicle and Mr. Peeples slammed on their brakes while Mr. Mossett attempted to steer back into the eastbound lane. The right side of Mr. Mossett’s vehicle struck the left front of Mr. Peeples’ vehicle. Mr. Mossett’s vehicle veered out of control over the south embankment edge, overturning approximately 200 feet down the embankment.

Mr. Mossett’s vehicle came to rest on its roof against a pine tree facing in a westerly direction. He sustained major injuries and was brought up to the roadway via a rope rescue and transported by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center. Ms. Mossett and Mr. Brandon Mossett climbed up to the roadway to await medical assistance. They were transported to Adventist Health of Sonora for treatment of minor injuries. Mr. Peeples did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.

Drugs and/or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this collision. We are recommending that charges of misdemeanor reckless driving causing injuries to others be filed against Mr. Mossett.
