** ROAD CLOSURE **
UPDATE: 2:23pm Alpine County Sheriff’s Office California Highway Patrol has informed us that both lanes will reopen around 7 p.m. this evening. Currently the wait to get through the controlled traffic is brief.
Highway 89 is closed from south of the Carson River Resort (2 miles south of Markleeville) to a point approximately 1 and 1/2 miles north of Monitor Junction.
A trailer with a piece of equipment on it has flipped over and is leaking fluids. CHP, Caltrans, Eastern Alpine Fire, California Highway Patrol and our office are on scene.
Due to the hazardous fluids necessitating a cleanup, there is currently no estimation on when the road will open.
The fluids are not running into the river, but into a culvert on the opposite side of the highway.
