Search and Rescue Team Dispatched to Assist Hikers at Natural Bridges

Vallecito, CA…On July 2, 2024, at about 6:55 PM, the Calaveras County 911 dispatch center received a 911 call from a group of hikers requesting assistance near Natural Bridges, Vallecito, CA. The caller stated they began their hike at the Coyote Creek Trailhead and followed it down to the river. Once at the river, the group became disoriented and was unable to orient themselves in the correct direction. While attempting to return to the trail, one of the persons in their group began suffering from symptoms similar to severe dehydration.

The Calaveras County Volunteer Search and Rescue Team and deputies, working in tandem, were dispatched to assist. The first deputies to arrive on the scene hiked down the trail, where they eventually located the group. After the group was provided additional water, their condition improved, allowing them to walk out of the canyon, where they were evaluated by medical personnel on the scene.

Calaveras County is known for its hiking trails, which traverse breathtaking and unique landscapes and geography. Special consideration should be given to hiking in extreme heat conditions. Not only does it expose the hiker to additional safety risks, but it also exposes the searchers charged with conducting the rescue operations.

While it is not recommended that you hike in extreme weather conditions, there are some tips to reduce the likelihood of contracting a heat-related illness.
• Start early to avoid the heat of the day.
• Hydrate often. As a general rule you should take at least 1-2 liters of water for every hour you will be on the trail.
• Carry electrolyte replacements and snacks that contain sodium and potassium.
• Remember to rest often in shaded areas.
• Understand the signs of related illnesses, throbbing headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea, disorientation or confusion, and lack of sweating despite hot temperatures.

Any of these should be considered a medical emergency. If you experience one or more of the symptoms, you should stop hiking and find a shady spot to cool down.
