Hewn Introduces The Privy Composting Outhouse™!

Arnold, CA…A Privy Composting Outhouse™ is the perfect way to take care of business when nature calls on your project or off grid site!  With the look and feel of an old fashioned outhouse it offers a convenient and elegant solutions to a problem we all share.

What makes our privy special is it has “hot swappable” compost bins, externally accessible, so if you are having visitors, family event  or other high use period you can keep everything rolling along in under a minute.

The Privy Composting Outhouse™ was developed by trial and error over the last two years working our our off grid project.  This configuration just works!  It is odor free, uses inexpensive, readily available compost bins.

When we finally finished the design we wondered why anyone else hadn’t designed and sold outhouses this way! It is such a simple design that eliminates most of the end user pain points that we actually filed a provisional patent application on the product.

It can scale in usage volume, compost bins are cheap and ubiquitous, if you layer saw dust or other organic compound over each job it has almost no odor and the only usage difference from a regular flush toilet is instead of flushing you scoop sawdust.

If you are new to composting toilets nature over time converts waste into harmless, beneficial compost.  Before that nothing touches the soil.  It can take from 6 months to 2 years to complete the compost cycle.

Once your order is placed it will be ready to ship within 14 days.  These are basically small custom buildings so you can specify a color if you want it to match up with another building etc.

The first 20 of these we make will be make entirely from wood we will mill ourselves from standing deads, beetle kill or timber removed during electrical line clearance or construction.
Standard roofing will be Corrugated Galvanized Steel

A Privy Composting Outhouse™ is constructed entirely from boards, no plywood, no composite, just good old fashioned boards.

How can this be “legal” nowadays – seems like a health hazard.

In a composting toilet nothing touches the soil. All waste goes into a composting waterproof composting bin. USFS, WHO, UN & others now have published guidelines on how long until the compost is safe. As short as 6 months in some cases but can be as long as 18 to 24 months in milder climates.

You are correct is stating traditional outhouses where the outhouse sits over a hole in the ground are illegal in most counties. This just looks like a traditional outhouse but it does not function like one.

Santa Cruz county has an official composting toilet program in areas that are rebuilding from fires. In their case the compost is bagged and taken to a typical waste disposal site where it is being monitored for until it is rendered safe.

So we take a huge Kamala in a bag, and drive it over? That sounds very expensive and that’s a lot more pollution than just using this or a regular out house.

Would be strange and difficult to get used to – and messy. Thanks, but no thanks!

The goal is to make the “user experience” as quick and seamless as a normal flush toilet. I think we have 🙂

What they don’t tell you is that the waste is bagged and sold to McDonalds, a key ingredient in their “BIG MAC”
