VTA Endorsements Letter to the Editor ~ Barbara Hecocks

Murphys, CA…I was disappointed recently to see that the VTA membership of VUSD endorsed Kathryn Eustis. Two years ago, a teacher at Michelson, wrote a letter to the editor stating that 90% of life is “showing up”. Kathryn has yet to show up to any of the VUSD board meetings. Last year when a seat opened up, she threw her name in the hat for the appointment.

After a long 3-hour meeting that ended in a stalemate, Kathryn withdrew her name and walked out of the meeting. She also did not attend the recent Candidates Night. How can the VTA endorse a candidate that quit one appointment and then didn’t show up for the candidates’ night? What kind of board member will she be if there are hard issues to tackle? The hypocrisy and bias are sickening. Jodi Sledge has been there from the beginning of her term. She was there at the Candidates Night and continues to be an advocate for the teachers and the students. Apparently “showing up” isn’t a priority anymore for the majority of the VTA membership.

Once a teacher said 90% of life is “showing up” therefore if teachers ever base anything on anything else they must be wrong. Is that the point you are trying to make? Stepping away when there was a contentious stalemate is not quitting an appointment. You can’t quit if you were not appointed. Kathryn has shown up for the community for decades in many ways. It is not her fault that VTA scheduled a candidates night to happen when she was on a long planned trip out of the country. How is it bias or hypocrisy to back a candidate with an extensive history of supporting families in Calaveras County and will bring a lot of working knowledge of public education to the board? You can endorse whatever candidates you choose, for whatever reason you choose. Why the attempt to accuse the teachers of endorsing a candidate for nefarious reasons? I think most people will know that teachers, professionals who are with our students and working hard every day, must have a good reason for choosing to endorse certain people. I hope everyone goes out and votes for their choice.

Sounds like you have your opinion, Barbara, and the teachers have theirs. They shared theirs when they voted to endorse everyone except Jodi and you shared yours when you wrote this editorial.

Now let’s all get out there and vote in the election.

“The hypocrisy and bias are sickening?”
This coming from someone who has spoken openly in a letter against a multi racial and gender diverse school board. You are not about bringing people together, providing a sense of belonging, acceptance, and looking out for those less fortunate or in need in our community or our schools. It is disturbing that your husband may hold these same values and is a current sitting VUSD board member.
What would be hypocritical, is if the teachers supported our children everyday in ways that grow them into kind, compassionate human beings and then did not endorse Kathryn Eustis in this election.

Goodness, how selfish to think people can’t have differing opinions!! It looks to me like VUSD had two well supported candidates. Be grateful! Knowing Kathryn professionally over the years, she will do much more than simply show up. She has been a great asset to our county and been a part of many meaningful and innovative

To the Bottomley and Heckoks family. You were chosen for a position of trust and power in our community. Please don’t abuse it by dragging the school district through the mud. Disagree all you want, but I urge you to do it respectfully.

I would like to see the stances each of these canidate’s support, open and to the public! This district and many other California school districts have become obsessed with matters that shouldn’t be subjects of controversy in our schools! These teachers, everyone of them need to stick to teaching their subject or subject areas, schools are not to be a hot bed for social engineering or any other social cause! Get with it teachers, I for one am watching your curriculum, if it contains anything but your subject area, you will be confronted!
