Murphys, CA…Join us for a favorite local event, Murphys Open House, taking place from 5-8pm on Friday, December 6th on Historic Main Street. Main Street is closed for our charming hometown parade at 5:30 and community open house. Shops, galleries, restaurants, and tasting rooms are open late, the street is lined with firepits, and the community is out enjoying catching up with friends, admiring the decorations, checking out what’s new in town, gathering gift ideas, and finding their holiday spirit. Open House is our business’s way of showing our appreciation for our community and customers. Many businesses will be offering treats and entertainment. Here’s just a sampling of what to expect.
Santa and the Mrs. will be at the V so you can share your wishlist with them and donate a new, unwrapped toy to help another family. The V will also have refreshments and sweet treats to share and 4H will be nearby selling holiday wreaths. Watch for the signs on Main Street.
Gold Country Roasters will be offering free hot drinks, cookies and an ornament and card decorating station from 4-7pm.
Cedar Creek Realty will be hosting Jack Skellington and offering warm drinks so stop by and grab a picture of yourself with Jack!
Murphys Irish Pub and the Boyle McDonald Tasting Room will be hosting live music.
Stop by The Spice Tin and try out their Chestnuts Roasted On An Open Fire.
Enjoy a live production of Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol at the Murphys Creek Theater starting at 7:30 pm – check out their full schedule of performances.
Start the day a little early with a pre-celebration at the Stevenot Winery featuring live music from 1-4pm.

“Biden-Harris admin weaponized DOE, targeted Christian, career colleges with nearly 70% of enforcement: report”
The Biden-Harris administration’s Department of Education issued 70 percent of its enforcement actions on Christian universities and career schools, despite the fact that these faith-based institutions account for less than 10 percent of the US student population, a new report shows.
The report from the American Principles Project (APP) found that “at least 12 Christian colleges have been the target of excessive penalties or banned from receiving federal student aid; by comparison, no Ivy League school has been the recipient of punitive action by the Office of Enforcement.” Among the colleges most heavily targeted include Grand Canyon University (GCU) and Liberty University (LU).
“The average fine against a Christian school for a Clery Act violation was $815,000, compared to $228,571 against public and private institutions,” according to the report.
Jon Schweppe, APP’s policy director, claimed Democrats under Biden have been “weaponizing every part of the federal government to target their opponents.”
“While major assaults from agencies like the Department of Justice have taken most of the headlines, we should not ignore similarly corrupt efforts in other agencies as well,” Schweppe told Fox News. “As our report details, the Biden-Harris Department of Education has been engaged in a long-running scheme to punish Christian colleges that are ideologically opposed to the left’s agenda. The unfair targeting of these institutions has been egregious, and it needs to stop immediately.”
The report noted that Grand Canyon University and Liberty University received record fines totaling more than “all penalties imposed over the past seven years combined.” In Nov. 2023, the DoE fined GCU $37.7 million for allegedly misleading students about the price of its doctoral programs. The Arizona-based university has filed an appeal. Biden’s Education Secretary Miguel Cardona vowed to shut down the institution in April during a congressional hearing.
The Education Department rejected GCU’s nonprofit designation after the state authorized it. The Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals recently reversed the decision. The case has been returned to the ED, which told Fox News in a statement that a “school’s religious affiliation or non-profit status has absolutely no bearing on our oversight and enforcement actions.”

A Maryland husband and wife who have a young child who has been taking puberty blockers declared they would seek asylum in Canada if President-elect Donald Trump implements the promised nationwide ban on minor sex change procedures. The Haluf family said they already had to move from Missouri to Maryland after the conservative-run state banned hormone therapy and puberty blockers for anyone under the age of 18. Now, the family is making another reassessment.
“We thought that by leaving Missouri and coming to Maryland, that we would be safe,” Sara Haluf told CNN. “And now we’re being threatened with anti-trans legislation on a federal level. A federal healthcare ban would likely be the moment we know it’s time to leave here.”
They are currently contemplating the possibility of leaving the country entirely. Erez Haluf, Sara’s husband, said they are in the process of submitting an asylum application to the Canadian government due to their concerns regarding the potential consequences of a Trump administration on their 12-year-old child, who they have been raising as the oppposite sex.
“If push comes to shove, we will go north, we will go to Canada,” said Erez Haluf. In 2023, Canadian LGBTQ groups moved to make it easier for trans-identified Americans to seek asylum in the nation, citing policies that prevent child sex changes.
On the campaign trail, Trump had pledged to revoke policies that supported sex change procedures, which Democrats call “gender-affirming care,” particularly for individuals under the age of 18. The president-elect has also declared that public schools would no longer receive federal funding if they advocate for concepts associated with gender transitioning or transgender individuals. He further pledged that any healthcare provider or hospital that offers sex change procedures or therapies to juveniles would no longer meet federal health and safety standards, and as a result, would no longer receive federal funding.
The Halufs are now concerned that their trans child may soon be unable to access the puberty blockers they are presently taking. “If she didn’t get the care, she would end up going through puberty, and it will be traumatizing to her to see all of those things happen to her body,” Sara told CNN.
