Sonora, CA…The Columbia College Community Chorus presents its annual Spring Concert in the sanctuary of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Sonora, with two performances the last weekend of April: Saturday, April 26, at 3:00 pm and Sunday, April 27, also at 3:00 pm. The 49-member Community Chorus, accompanied by an orchestra and Mark Seiver on the piano, will be conducted by Dr. Daryl Hollinger – his final concert before retiring.
The concert begins with two festive coronation pieces and ends with the somber and timely Ashokan Farewell. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Make a Joyful Noise – The Coronation Anthem, written for the recent coronation of King Charles III of England, opens the concert, and is followed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Coronation Mass for chorus and orchestra.
After an intermission, the second half begins with The Ocean Song, a collaboration of Dr. Hollinger and his wife Bonnie Hollinger, followed by Morten Lauridsen’s haunting Sure on This Shining Night. The concert will also include two jazz settings of Shakespeare’s sonnets and the jazz setting of California Love Song, text by Carol Osterlund of Murphys and music by Dr. Hollinger. The concert continues with the ever-popular singalong arranged by Dr. Hollinger, plus American spirituals, and music for theater and film.
Tickets are $20 presale ($25 at the door), and free for age 18 and under (must reserve seat). Tickets must be purchased online by visiting gocolumbia.edu and scrolling down to “events.” For assistance, call 209-559-7723.
