Fish and Game Committee to Consider Coyote Hunting Limits at May Meeting

Sacramento, CA…The Wildlife Resources Committee, a subcommittee of the California Fish and Game Commission, is set to consider a proposal that would place coyotes under a bag limit and seasonal hunting restrictions. The proposal, which first surfaced earlier this year, was controversial due to the lack of notice to the public when it first emerged from the Committee and was forwarded to the Commission.

Many stakeholders are concerned about the prospect of placing a take limit on coyotes, which already pose a threat to livestock herds and can be found in close proximity to even the most suburban communities. A sharp population spike caused by such an action could severely impact public safety and ranching operations around the state.

The Committee is accepting written comments on the proposal through May 2, 2025. RCRC encourages concerned member counties to weigh in on the proposal. The agenda for the meeting can be found on the Commission’s website.

Improved regulations need to be implemented in regard to coyotes and public safety. The coyote population is growing to where it’s out of control. Coyotes are roaming residential areas, now even in the beach cities of SoCal. It’s not at all uncommon to see coyotes roaming on our properties at night. They come right up to the door on occasions. They walk up the driveways and try to attack cats hiding under the cars. Coyote sightings are shared almost daily in our community and in surrounding cities with Ring camera apps showing the coyote population steadily increasing. My daughter was confronted by a coyote late at night when coming home from work. My teenager had howling coyotes run past her on the street when she was returning from a night course at college. A neighbor’s cat was mangled by 3 coyotes. We also hear coyotes howling at night in the park nearby. Waiting til a a child, adult, or elderly person is hurt is too late to implement change and to take appropriate action. Proactive measures are needed now before anyone potentially gets hurt.

Our pets are being killed by coyotes each day, we live in suburbs and no one seems to want to assist with this issue.
    Something needs to be done.

I am a 5th generation cattle rancher and have had coyote problems constantly with them harassing calves and cows ready to calve. This has nothing to do with coyotes it’s all about protecting the wolves that are on their way here. If they stop coyote hunting then nobody can kill a wolf and say they thought it was a coyote
