Arnold, CA…Dennis Wayne Pinion December 18, 1944 ~ May 9, 2025 (age 80). Dennis Wayne Pinion, a dedicated community volunteer, naturalist, and technology professional, passed away peacefully at his home in Arnold, California, surrounded by his son, Bill Pinion Acikalin, his companion Liz Mullally, and his friend Dave Frederick.

Dennis faced pancreatic cancer with the same quiet strength and dignity that characterized his life. Dennis was born in Los Angeles in 1944 to William and Betty Pinion. He lost his father to a sudden medical condition at the age of 22. Shortly thereafter, he married his first wife, Lynda Nargie, on May 16, 1967. Together, they had two children: Bill, born in March 1970, and Paul, born in August 1971. Dennis and Lynda divorced in May 1973. Dennis subsequently married Barbara Radd, who he shared his life with until her passing in 2019.

Dennis developed a profound appreciation for California’s natural beauty, becoming especially knowledgeable about the state’s trees and plants. His passion for nature led him to Henry Coe State Park, where he served as a dedicated docent for many years, sharing his extensive knowledge with visitors. He shared this passion for nature with his second wife, Barbara Radd.

His commitment to the park extended to his nine-year tenure on the Pine Ridge Association board of directors, helping to guide and preserve this natural treasure for future generations.

Dennis’s professional career was spent at BMC Software, where he worked in the company’s research and development office in San Jose. He was part of the team that helped grow BMC from its humble beginnings into one of the world’s largest independent software vendors.

Beyond his professional contributions, Dennis was instrumental in supporting the expansion of the Coe Park Visitor Center, actively participating in fundraising efforts and volunteer programs.

A man of diverse interests and unwavering commitment, Dennis was a member of the Masons, where he served as treasurer for his local Masonic Lodge for many years, embodying the organization’s principles of brotherhood and service. Dennis was also licensed to fly small planes, which he did frequently during his life.

His generosity extended to numerous causes, including the Calaveras County Library, Columbia College, and ProPublica. He was also passionate about protecting California’s water resources, working to preserve this vital natural asset.

Dennis’s impact on others was profound. Through his philanthropic efforts, he helped many people, including formerly incarcerated individuals, guiding them toward a better future. He was an active and proud member of the Schwab Community Forum, where his brilliant contributions were widely recognized and appreciated. A friend remembered Dennis as “incredibly intelligent,” noting that “he would help people out, but not without thought.” This measured approach to generosity reflected his wisdom and thoughtfulness.

The outpouring of condolences following his passing has been overwhelming, with many remembering his intellect and compassion. He touched the lives of many who will remember him for a long time to come.

Those who knew Dennis will remember him for his intelligence, his love of nature, his commitment to community service, and his meaningful friendships. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, the natural spaces he helped preserve, and the causes he supported.

Dennis is survived by his son Bill Pinion Acikalin and Bill’s wife Tulin Acikalin, his son Paul Lorin Pinion, and his granddaughter Ayla Acikalin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Barbara Radd, with whom he shared much of his life’s journey. In his final year, Dennis found companionship and joy with Liz Mullally, whose presence brought him comfort during his illness.

They will all continue to carry forward his values and memories.
