Since the suspected assassin of Charlie Kirk, Tyler Robinson, has been arrested and charged with murder, there have been a number of left-wing media outlets and influencers attempting to falsely characterize him as “MAGA” or “far-right,” with some large accounts even posting doctored photos to make it appear as if Robinson was a Trump supporter.
USA opinion writer Rex Huppke, for example, wrote a piece titled, “Charlie Kirk shooting suspect doesn’t fit MAGA’s reckless political narrative.”
The USA Today writer claimed on Friday, with the story being published at 5:14 pm, “Republican lawmakers, influencers and President Donald Trump have been wildly and irresponsibly predicting and posting online, with great certainty, that the shooter must be a radical leftist. They all but declared war on ‘the left’ over the death of Kirk, a controversial right-wing activist whom they swiftly elevated to sainthood. Predictably, the grotesque prejudgment has fallen flat, and the actual suspect in no way fits the right’s cynical political narrative.”
USA Today then went on to cite that Robinson grew up in a “church-going Mormon family,” despite reports that Robinson had not been involved with the church for years, per The Times. “I hadn’t seen Tyler at church for a while,” someone familiar with the family told reporters.
Additionally, Robinson allegedly inscribed bullets with Antifa-linked language, including “Hey fascist! Catch!” as well as the lyrics from the song “Bella Ciao,” once an Italian folksong, but has been taken up by far-left Antifa groups in recent years.
Left-wing account Anonymous on X also posted and then deleted a doctored photo of Robinson in a t-shirt to make him appear like a Trump supporter, but not before the image went viral online.
The original photo of Robinson was with a plain maroon shirt without logos. However, the photo of the shirt the account originally posted said, “Trump” with an American flag and “Make America Great Again” photoshopped onto the piece of clothing.
The false post had millions of views before the account deleted the false image later on.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox, speaking to the Wall Street Journal, said that Robinson was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” His family had also told police that he thought Kirk was “full of hate and spreading hate” with the “viewpoints he had,” further showing that Robinson was not of the right, but on the extreme left of the political spectrum.
On Reddit and other social media platforms, left-wing users have also been spreading the lie that Robinson was on the far right.
The Daily Beast also posted an article attempting to paint Robinson as a conservative, with a caption on social media saying, “MAGA may have been quick to point fingers at the left for Charlie Kirk’s death, but Tyler Robinson’s grandmother insists that they come from a family of Trump supporters.”
The left-wing outlet cited comments from Robinson’s grandma, who said her “family members are Republican” and that she did not know of “a single one who’s a Democrat.”
The outlet then cited a photo that has been going viral online of Robinson in his younger years, dressed up in a costume featuring Donald Trump, where he appears to be riding on Trump’s back.
NBC News, with its headline, also misled about the political messages left on the bullet casings allegedly by Robinson. The corporate outlet released a report titled, “Charlie Kirk shooting suspect referenced fascism and memes on bullets, officials say.”
The outlet described, “Hey fascist! Catch! ↑ → ↓↓↓,” as a reference to “a video game that’s been interpreted as a satire of fascism.” The outlet then referenced the lyrics of an Antifa-linked song, “Bella Ciao,” found on one of the bullet casings. After this, the outlet claimed, as of yesterday in the report, “It’s not clear what political perspectives Robinson held from other publicly available materials,” and then referenced the photo of Robinson when he was younger in the Trump-related costume.
Robinson has been charged with assassinating Charlie Kirk on Wednesday at Utah Valley University. He was turned in to the authorities with the help of his father, and he reportedly lived with a transgender partner.
