Sacramento, CA…Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that more than $128 million in Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation (SALC) Program grants have been approved to permanently protect more than 40,000 acres of croplands and rangelands across 24 counties, returning more than 11,000 acres to California Native American tribes, securing farmland for military veterans, and benefiting low-income communities.
Land protection goes hand-in-hand with community needs – today’s grants work with Native communities, veterans, and farmers in low-income areas to ensure that California’s fertile farmland is put to good agricultural use, while protecting our environment, our unique habitats and biodiversity, and communities.

Eight projects receiving grants will return 11,316 acres of land to California Native American tribes to support cultural and traditional agriculture uses. This work furthers partnerships between the state and tribes and builds on the Governor’s direction for state entities to work cooperatively with tribes in returning ancestral lands to tribal ownership.
“It has never been more important to protect California’s agricultural lands from conversion to more pollution-heavy land uses such as residential development,” said Erin Curtis, executive director of SGC. “SALC projects that support farmers, preserve habitats and protect our environment are a win-win-win, and we are so grateful for the partnership.”
These funds support 52 grants, including grants that will secure hundreds of acres of land for three veteran-owned farms, with another four grants that will support farmers in low-income communities. These projects support landowners and the local agricultural economy, maintain access to nutritious food, help prevent the conversion of farmlands to development, protect rural lands and habitats, and prevent more pollution.
“Once we lose California’s agricultural lands and open space, we can never recover them. The SALC program protects our state’s agriculture, greenhouse gas emission reduction and biodiversity for generations to come,” said Jennifer Lucchesi, Director of the Department of Conservation. “We are proud to be partnering with the Strategic Growth Council on this important milestone and congratulate all the award recipients on this funding opportunity.”
Once completed, these acquisition investments will permanently protect tens of thousands of acres and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 3,332,497 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which equates to taking 777,322 gasoline-powered vehicles off the road for one year.
This funding comes from Round 10 of SALC, which, over the course of ten rounds, has awarded over $400 million to support over 200 projects to protect 240,000 acres.
SALC is a component of the Strategic Growth Council’s Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program (AHSC). The two programs work together to ensure that California is building new affordable homes quickly, in the right places, while protecting open spaces and working agricultural lands at risk of development.

British billionaire quits donating to US charities after Americans for Public Trust reveals $553 MILLION activist operation

British billionaire and hedge fund manager Christopher Hohn is stopping donations to activist groups after a report by Americans for Public Trust (APT) exposed his foundation for funding groups that promote radical political agendas in the United States.
APT’s report alleged that organizations funded by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), which Hohn founded and chairs, “pushed for nothing less than the complete radicalization of the U.S. political landscape.” CIFF is heavily funded by Hohn’s hedge fund, which manages nearly $60 billion
“For far too long, Christopher Hohn, and other foreign billionaires like Hansjörg Wyss, have been able to exploit loopholes that allow foreign money to fund policy fights that shape American politics to fit their radical agendas. Hohn is only stopping his giving now that we caught him,” APT Executive Director Caitlin Sutherland told Fox Business. “The fact that hundreds of millions of foreign dollars were able to quietly flow into our political system unchecked illustrates the urgent need for Congress to take action to end the political foreign funding of U.S. nonprofits.”
Following the report, CIFF announced it would redirect its funding to non-US NGOs, citing uncertainty about the legality of foreign funding in the United States.
“Unfortunately, we are no longer confident in our understanding of the US policy environment for foreign funders of US NGOs, including for international work, which is our focus,” CIFF said. “Consequently, CIFF’s Board have decided that, as a precautionary measure, and until applicable laws and rules, and the execution of them, are made clearer by relevant authorities, CIFF should redirect its funding to, and restructure its contracts to be with, non-US NGOs.”
Last month’s APT report found that CIFF gave more than $553 million to US-based organizations between 2014 and 2023. Much of the money went to groups promoting green energy and protests against the fossil fuel industry. The report also claimed CIFF funded the Rocky Mountain Institute, a China-connected organization that has advocated for banning gas stoves. CIFF was also pushing funds into diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, such as the New Venture Fund.
“Because there is little oversight and few restrictions on foreign giving to U.S.-based organizations, Hohn’s actions via CIFF are extremely questionable and murky. More investigations both on the state and federal levels are needed to determine to what extent any foreign giving laws and regulations may have been violated by Hohn and CIFF,” The report stated
APT further alleged that CIFF had financial ties to Chinese Communist Party-linked entities and that CIFF CEO Kate Hampton “maintained what appears to be a cozy relationship” with “green” groups connected to the Chinese government. CIFF is registered as an NGO in China and has reportedly given millions to Chinese state-affiliated organizations.
“The British nonprofit has given millions to various organizations directly under the auspices of the Chinese government,” APT said.
