Murphys, CA…Calaveras County school board members and superintendents from all five school districts gathered last Thursday for the annual School Board Dinner, hosted by Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools, Jared Hungerford. The event featured guest speaker Yuri Calderon, Executive Director of the Small School Districts Association (SSDA), accompanied by Amy Roehl, SSDA’s Director of Programs and former Calaveras County resident.

Calderon shared insight into the unique challenges and opportunities facing small rural school districts across California. Of the state’s 1,000 districts, 651 serve fewer than 2,500 students, and that number continues to grow. The SSDA represents 420 member districts, uniting and amplifying the voices of small school districts through legislative advocacy, collaboration, and professional development.
“Schools are the heart of their communities in rural areas,” Calderon noted, emphasizing the essential role small districts play in sustaining local connection and opportunity. Founded in 1983, SSDA’s mission is to unite and elevate small school districts, and its vision—Empowering educational leaders for the success of every student—continues to guide its statewide efforts.
Calderon highlighted the importance of rural schools across California, noting that they serve over half a million students. Rural schools act as community hubs, offer personalized education, and are resilient, diverse, and innovative, yet face distinct challenges that require continued advocacy and support.
He also outlined the association’s current legislative priorities: promoting local control by reducing unnecessary state-mandated plans, returning funding flexibility to schools, and addressing the staffing crisis through recruitment, investment, and fair standards.
“Our small districts face unique challenges, but they are also models of resilience and innovation,” said Jared Hungerford, Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools. “This annual gathering is a chance to celebrate their successes and learn how we can collectively strengthen education across our county.”
The annual gathering provides an opportunity for Calaveras County’s education leaders to come together, share ideas, and strengthen collaboration among the county’s small but vital rural districts.

25 years ago our schools up here were rated very high in the state. I haven’t followed how we rate today. Something tells me that under democrats and their DEI, their policies, that those rates have fallen. Its not like one could look at test scores anymore, because who’s really going to trust a liberal democrat today? Democratic donors reportedly backed out of a major fundraising event for former Vice President Kamala Harris, with one even sending a “profanity-laced rejection,” according to a report Wednesday.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has been struggling to raise money during President Donald Trump’s second term in office.
According to several people “familiar with the conversations,” the DNC attempted to reach out to major donors earlier this year through the San Francisco-based fundraiser, but most had declined.
“Upon receiving the invitation, one replied with a profanity-laced rejection,” the report read. “Others said they didn’t want to give to the party until it produced substantive plans to win elections. Those who declined told the national party they had commitments and couldn’t make it work.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that the DNC eventually found a donor to host the event, but it “raised less than organizers had hoped.”
It added that this reaction, as well as a significant decrease in funding, could be a response to frustrations over Harris’s failed presidential campaign and a lack of a new game plan for the midterm elections.
