He was married to his wife Adrienne (Schaumann) for nearly 70 years until her passing last May. They built a life and a family together first living in Port Ewen, New York and then adventuring west to California in 1964, where they resided in Saratoga, California to raise their three children. They moved to Tucson, Arizona in the 1980s, splitting their time between homes there and in the Sierras in California, and then settled in retirement in Angels Camp for the past 25 years.
Carmin was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in the Catskills. He earned a full scholarship to attend the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1955. He later earned an M.B.A. from the MIT Sloan School of Management as an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow in 1978.
He joined the IBM Corporation as an engineer in Kingston, New York, where he worked until retirement as an executive in 1985. His career accomplishments included earning patents for key inventions that contributed to disk drive products and the very first laser printers. He became a product manager for IBM in San Jose, California, and opened a new facility in Tucson, Arizona first as V.P. and Laboratory Director and then the General Manager of both the research laboratory and manufacturing plant. He traveled the world for his work including many trips to Germany and Japan.
Carmin had a passion for fishing. He won a number of fishing tournaments and in his retirement enjoyed taking his boat out on the New Melones Reservoir to go bass fishing. He also enjoyed both trout and deep sea fishing with his children in California, Oregon, Mexico and Hawaii.
In his younger days he liked to play tennis and golf with his wife, and to go skiing with his family. He was a baseball coach for his son and daughter, and a YMCA Indian Guides leader. He dearly loved his cats and dog members of their family over the years. He enjoyed taking care of his garden and grew vegetables.
He is survived by his three children and their two sons-in-law, Jeanne (David Miller), Terry, and Tom (Jack Garrity), his sister, Sandra (Rosato) Williams, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carmin was a smart and compassionate husband, father, and friend who will very much be missed.
