San Andreas, CA…Meet Koda (A060318), a neutered male German Shepherd, about 3 years old and weighing 84 pounds.
Koda is a strikingly handsome shepherd who has only recently arrived at Calaveras County Animal Services and is still adjusting to shelter life. With his classic build and attentive expression, he has the presence many people associate with the German Shepherd breed. But behind those steady eyes is a dog who has experienced more upheaval than any young adult dog should.
Koda was first rehomed by his original owner and later abandoned by a second owner, left behind with his crate and favorite toy. It’s easy to understand why he might feel uncertain in a new environment. Despite that instability, he remains deeply people-oriented. He bonds with those he trusts and seeks reassurance from the humans around him.
He is generally neutral around other dogs—calm and non-reactive—but his strongest attachment is to people. Because of his past, he does experience some separation anxiety and will do best with a home where someone is around much of the time and committed to helping him rebuild confidence. Koda isn’t especially treat-motivated, so connection, consistency, and patience will be the keys to earning his trust.
At 84 pounds, Koda is a large, strong dog and does pull somewhat on leash, so he’ll need an adopter comfortable handling his size and continuing his training. As he relaxes, his playful side begins to show, especially when he has a favorite toy in his mouth. He is past the puppy stage but still in the prime of his life, ready to devote himself to the right person or family.
