San Andreas, CA…The 45th Annual Math Mini Bowl brought together 75 students from six schools across Calaveras County on April 22, 2026, for a day of fast-paced problem solving, teamwork, and academic competition. Hosted by the Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE), the long-standing event continues to inspire enthusiasm for mathematics among 5th and 6th grade students throughout the county.
This year’s competition featured students ready to put their skills to the test in three challenging events: the Blitz, an individual 50-question test; the Huddle, a two-person team challenge; and the Bomb, a five-person competition. Each competition was administered through the Kahoot! quizzing platform.
Students demonstrated their accuracy and perseverance throughout the day, with multiple ties across placement levels, highlighting both the rigor of the competition and the high level of student achievement.
“The Math Mini Bowl continues to be a highlight of the school year,” said Debbie Strand, CCOE Coordinator of Communications and Student Events. “The level of focus, collaboration, and determination we see from these students is truly remarkable. It’s exciting to watch them rise to the challenge and support each other.”
In the fifth-grade division, students from Albert Michelson Elementary delivered a strong showing across all three events. Elijah Madsen earned first place in the Blitz, while Eliot Minkler and Matthew Jones teamed up to secure first place in the Huddle. Albert Michelson also claimed the top spot in the Bomb team competition.
The sixth-grade division was led by Avery Middle School and Mokelumne Hill Elementary. Reid Ballard of Avery Middle School earned first place in the Blitz. In the Huddle, a tie for first place was awarded to the teams of Olivia Collins and Lucy Abando, and Reid Ballard and Tharin Rohrbach, all representing Avery Middle School. In the Bomb competition, Mokelumne Hill Elementary and Avery Middle School shared a first-place tie.
The success of the Math Mini Bowl is made possible through the generous support of community partners including Dignity Health – Mark Twain Medical Center, Adventist Health – Sonora, Bank of Stockton, Middleton’s, Angels-Murphys Rotary, and the Calaveras County Office of Education. CCOE also extends its sincere appreciation to the many volunteers who contributed to the event’s success, including CCOE’s Technology Department for their support throughout the day.
