Angels Camp, CA…The City of Angels is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Poortinga as Chief of Police, following a competitive recruitment process. On May 5, 2026, the City Council voted in approval of his employment agreement under Resolution 26-50.

The Chief of Police position has been vacant since late December 2025. Since January 7, 2026, Joel Broumas has served as Interim Chief, providing steady leadership during the transition period.

Mr. Poortinga brings more than 25 years of law enforcement experience to the role. His career began with the Angels Camp Police Department, where he served for 15 years as a patrol officer, detective, and sergeant. He later expanded his experience with the Modesto and Lathrop Police Departments before returning to Angels Camp in September 2025. Since his return, he has served as both Sergeant and Acting Police Chief.

“Steven Poortinga’s extensive experience, leadership, and deep connection to the Angels Camp community make him exceptionally well-suited to lead our Police Department,” said City Administrator, Michael Hodson.

The recruitment process yielded five qualified candidates. Following interviews conducted by a panel that included the Interim Chief of Police, the Sonora Chief of Police, and the City Administrator, Mr. Poortinga emerged as the top candidate.

As Chief of Police, Mr. Poortinga will oversee all operations of the department, including patrol, investigations, traffic enforcement, communications, and community policing efforts. He will also be responsible for developing departmental policies, fostering interagency partnerships, and supporting the City’s public safety mission.

Mr. Poortinga is recommended to be appointed at Step 2 of the established salary schedule, which is within the approved range for the position. The role is fully funded in the City’s Fiscal Year 2025–26 budget.

A swearing in ceremony will be held for Poortinga on May 6, 2026 at the Angels Camp Police Department at 9:00am.
