Gann Fire Evening Update: Arrest Made, 10,373 Acres, 19% Contained, 1,623 Personnel

San Andreas, CA…CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers arrested Herbert Wayne Smith, 65, of Valley Springs, on Monday, August 3, 2026, following an origin and cause investigation into the Gann Fire in Calaveras County. The investigation determined that Smith was responsible for recklessly causing the Gann Fire, which ignited on August 3, 2026, in a rural area southeast of New Hogan Lake.

Zone CCU-110 has been split. CCU-110-A remains in Evacuation Order status. CCU-110-B has been reduced to an Evacuation Warning.

The Gann Fire is now 9,363 acres and 10% contained.

Last night a firing operation began that will continue on today. This is a firefighting tactic used to remove unburned fuels to help contain the fire. It is expected to complete today, and additional smoke may be visible during this time.
